Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 January 2011: Sinulog - feast of Santo Nino

This weekend the whole of Cebu celebrated the feast of Santo Nino. Santo Nino is also the patron of the parish in Pasil so there was a fiesta in the local area too.

On the Saturday morning at dawn there was a Fluvial parade. The Parish and DBYC each had a boat which members boarded ready to sail to Mactan bridge. There were thousands of people present on the bridge waiting to catch a glimpse of the Santo Nino. The Santo Nino was placed on a special boat and was paraded around the waiting vessels for everyone to see before making its way to Pier One to enter the Basilica for a mass before traveling round the streets of the city.

The procession of the Santo Nino lasted all afternoon with people praying the rosary and lighting candles. 1 million people joined to show their devotion to Santo Nino. Unfortunately, the heavens opened and everyone got very wet on the procession.

In the parish on the Saturday there was also a mass wedding of nine couples. Those couples who had been 'living in' with each other but were not married were able to marry and make their marriage acceptable in the eyes of the church. There was a parade of all the Sinulog dances from the different chapels around the streets as well.

On Sunday there was the Grand Parade with different groups performing the Sinulog street dances all around the city. The parade lasted from 9am to 9pm and the city was extremely full. It was expected that 3 million people joined the Grand Parade, from all over the Philippines and from abroad.

In the parish on Sunday two baptism services were held with a total of 162 children.
