Training Center

The Vocational Training Centre was established in 1969 and now caters for 100 trainees. The center offers training for the poor but deserving youth. Trainees study either Mechanical Technology, Automotive Technology, Wood and Furniture Technology or Garment Making Technology. The students are also taught Electricity, English, Maths, Job Motivational Training and Salesian and Christian values. Emphasis is placed on giving the trainees the skills necessary in life so they can build a better future for themselves. Trainees are taught how to be responsible and honest citizens and children of God.

The school day commences at 7:30am with the national anthem, prayers and a good morning talk followed by chores. The day also ends with prayers, a good night talk and chores. There is an hours break for lunch and a new canteen has been set up in the center so the students can have a healthy meal for lunch. There is also bible studies, community service and sports on a Saturday.

Students study as Juniors for 6 months and then as Seniors for 6 months before proceeding to On-the-Job training for a further 6 months. There are 4 exams per semester and regular quizzes, assignments and projects to check the trainee's progress.

A welcoming message to the new trainees:

My dear Bosconians,

Welcome to a New School Year. You are here in Don Bosco to journey together with our Educative Pastoral Community- which consists of the Salesians, the Parents and YOU- young people, whom God has entrusted to our care. We are a community who believes in God and His will to save us. We, therefore, praise and thank Him for having brought us together.

In our efforts to do God's will in our journey towards maturity, we need to be guided by some rules that are inspired by His Spirit and the teachings of Don Bosco. We, therefore, have encouraged all of you to study well the Don Bosco Students' Guidelines as our guide in our common search for Christian growth. The set of guidelines is an expression of our concern for the steady and healthy development of your mind, heart, body and most of all your soul. The rules are formulated to help you strengthen you character and hopefully help you acquire responsible self-discipline. Where there is no discipline, there will never be good education. They guarantee that atmosphere of order, cooperation and peace, which is so necessary to bring success to your integral formation.

By the very fact that you enroll in Don Bosco, you agree to abide by these guidelines. With the signing of the agreement, you commit yourself to grow towards maturity. Study the rules carefully, understand them and above all, do your best to practice them with joy, even if nobody is watching you. Real discipline comes from within and real learning also comes from within.

May our blessed Mother Mary, the Help of Christians and St. John Bosco, accompany us throughout this school year 2010-11.

Yours in Don Bosco,

Bro. Carlo, Bacalla, SBD, Training Director
