Scholarships

Education is the key to success

Education is truly the key to success in life. Not only does it give the opportunity to apply for the higher paid jobs but also increases confidence and self-esteem. The trainees and working scholars all wish to study in order to find a job so they can support their families. With an extra income money can be found for siblings education, medication if a family member is sick and money for every day needs such as food. Many scholars and trainees go on to well paid jobs and have sucessful careers. They are able to escape the poverty cycle and support members of their family to do the same. Some scholars re-pay the center by giving donations.

New sponsors are always needed as at the moment there are only 11 scholars who are studying at a higher educational level and only around 100 trainees. Sponsors are given regular updates so they know how the students they sponsor are progressing. If you are a company, an organisation, a charity or an individual and would like to sponsor a student or many please email Fr. Boni at boni_93@yahoo.com

Elementary and High School
Education in the public schools in the Philippines is technically free. Pasil School is approximately 100 meters from the Don Bosco Center. The school caters for elementary students (6 to 12 year olds) between 7:30am and 4pm. In the evening the school caters for high school students (12 to 16 year olds). The school runs a day time and evening session because of the lack of facilities and classrooms. Although the education is free, there are lots of hidden costs such as uniforms, paper, books, stationary supplies, materials for projects, and fees for sitting exams. As a result, many poor families in Pasil cannot afford to send their children to school, especially when they could bring in extra income for the family, for example by selling goods. Many students also drop out of school for a few years due to financial problems and some return later to complete their education.

Don Bosco offers a scholarship program for elementary and high school students. At the moment there are 74 elementary students and 26 high school students. Don Bosco gives the students project materials, stationary supplies and books. Currently, the program is sponsored by a Japanese group MEGUKO. In return the scholars are asked to attend a study period for an hour every night in order to complete their assignments/projects etc. It is vital these children are given a place to study in the center as there is a lack of proper study space in their homes.

College Students/Working Students
There are currently 11 working college students. College/University is extremely expensive in the Philippines. It can cost anywhere from 20,000 to 60,000 pesos a semester and there are two semesters in an academic year. The students study many courses such as teaching, nursing, computing, accounting and engineering. At the moment the scholarship program is funded by AMIE, Sebastian and other individuals. The students tuition fees are paid for them and any necessary money for projects. In return the college students are asked to give back to Don Bosco. Those who were previous trainees are asked to become teachers, for example teaching dress making or drafting. Those who were not previous trainees are asked to complete office work, such as working on the scholarship program, production, accounts and secretarial work. This additional work gives the students other vital skills which will be important when they graduate and need to find employment.

Trainees Scholars
All the trainees are scholars. The training center is currently sponsored by AMIE, Sebastian, Rettore, Timex and Plantation Bay. It costs around 5,000 pesos for the students to study in Don Bosco Center as a Junior and then a Senior. Exam fees have to be paid by the students (8 in total) and also for different project materials depending on the course. The actual cost for each trainee is 20,000 peso for them to complete their course. However, some trainees do not have enough finances to pay even the reduced rates. Another problem is the issue of transportation. Some trainees have to spend a great deal traveling to the center and cannot afford to do so six days a week. As a result they are full scholars whom have everything paid for them.
